Abstract:

Introduction: Osteochondroma is one of the most common benign bone tumors and however is relatively uncommon in the jaws. The aim of this study was to review the literature about osteochondroma and to report a case of large osteochondroma in temporomandibular joint space. Treatment included osteotomy of condylar neck followed by reshaping.Case report: This study presents a 26-year-old man with a large osteochondroma in temporomandibular joint space in left side of his face with the complaint of facial asymmetry (deviated to the right side). The patient was admitted to the Hospital of Taleghani in Tehran, in October 2002. Conclusion: Condylectomy cannot be recommended as routine in all cases. Common surgical treatments include condylectomy and reconstruction. If the tumor involves only a limited area of the condylar surface, then preservation of the remaining portion of the condyle and reshaping should be done. Reasons for not taking such a conservative approach are the possibilities of malignancy and the risk of recurrence. In this case report, because of large size of tumor, zygomatic arch was broken and osteotomy of condylar neck was used and remaining part was reshaped. The zygomatic arch was returned to the primary position and fixed with miniplate and screw.

Purpose: Tooth brushing is the most common method for removing dental plaque. The design of toothbrush influences the amount of plaque removal. The purpose of this study was to compare the two manual toothbrushes (Oral-B and chic) in their efficacy in removing plaque.Material & Method: This experimental study was done cross over and single blind. Forty children 8 to 10years old were selected and told to stop all oral hygiene procedures for 24 hours. In the first visit dental plaque was evaluated by means of Shick-Ash index before and after brushing with one of the test brushes. The brushing was done 20 times in every quadrant by one of the authors by scrub method. Children were instructed to use their routine method of oral hygiene and return to the clinic one-week later. The same plaque removal procedure and plaque index assessment was applied for the other toothbrush in the second appointment. Data were analysed using Paired -T-test.Results: Statistical analysis showed significant differences in reducing PI for the two toothbrushes (chic, P=0/0005 and oral-B, P=0/0006). The results indicated no significant differences in reducing PI between the two toothbrushes (P=0/075).Conclusion: Both toothbrushes (Oral-B and chic) were equally effective in reducing PI. It seems that correct brushing as equally important as kind of toothbrushes.

Abstract:

Introduction: Teeth loss and its consequences, such as mental discomfort, most often negatively affects one's health and well-being. Dental implants were introduced in an attempt to raise patients' satisfaction and improve health and quality of life in all dimensions. Hence, this study was performed to check the impact of implantation on the oral health indices in patients who were candidates for implant treatment in Isfahan city. Materials & Methods: In this analytical cross-sectional study, the lifestyle quality of 73 patients who were referred to Isfahan’, s Islamic Azad Dental University (Khorasgan) and its affiliated private centers, was assessed using the OIDP index before and after their implant treatment between 2019 and 2020. Also, data analysis was done using Independent ttest, Paired t-test and analysis of variance ANOVA test (α,= 0. 05). Results: In the current study, the most common problem and with the most effect on oral satisfaction quality were teeth lost and extractions, respectively. Majorly, the effects were evident on the eating habits (83. 6%), satisfaction of communication with others (68. 5%) and quality of smile (64. 4%). In the questionnaire, an attenuated score of OIDP was recorded, before the implant treatment compared to that of post-treatment, which was statistically meaningful (p value < 0. 05). Conclusion: According to the current study data, we can conclude that implant treatment can have a positive effect on the patients' lifestyle quality.

Abstract:

Background & Aim: The abrasive quality of children’s toothpaste has long been the concern of dental professionals. On the other hand, manufacturers have tried to improve the quality and establish ingredient standards. This study was designed to compare the abrasiveness of three locally produced toothpastes, namely Darugar, Pooneh and Kam with Oral-B standard. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was conducted using 24 samples of composite blocks imbedded in acrylic material. The weight of each specimen was measured by a digital scale at 0.0001gr accuracy. Each specimen was brushed with 200gr force along with the selected tooth paste solutions using V8 cross brushing machine. The weight of each specimen was measured after 5000, 10000, 15000 and 20000 strokes. The mean weight-loss as well as their standard deviations were calculated for each group. The collected data was then analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey statistical tests. Results: No significant difference was detected between four types of toothpastes after 5000 and 10000 strokes. However, significant differences were observed between Darugar toothpaste and the rest (Kam, Pooneh and Oral-B) after 15000 and 20000 strokes. Conclusion: Darugar pediatric toothpaste showed higher abrasive rate when compared with other toothpastes. The amount of wear was shown to be similar in Kam, Pooneh and Oral-B.

Abstract:

Background and objective: Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common chronic bacterial infections in the world, especially in the developing countries. This bacterium is the cause of many diseases such as lymphoma, gastritis, peptic ulcers, and stomach cancer. According to recent reports, H. pylori infection can potentially increase the risk of colon cancer. The current study aimed at investigating the association of H. pylori infection and the risk of colorectal cancer and adenomatous polyps. Methods: The current study was conducted on 50 patients with colon cancer and adenomatous polyps as the case group and 100 subjects with no specific pathologies (i e, polyps, neoplasms, or inflammatory diseases) as the control group. Blood samples were collected from the patients in order to assess the presence of anti-Helicobacter pylori infection antibodies, and the serum titer levels of anti-Helicobacter pylori IgG and IgA antibodies were measured using indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a kit procured by Pishtaz Teb Company (Iran). Results: A total of 33 patients in the current study had adenomatous polyps and 17 had colon cancer. H. pylori infection (IgA >20 U/mL and IgG >10 U/mL) was significantly more prevalent in the patients with colon cancer and adenomatous polyps compared with the healthy controls (P= 0. 003, P= 0. 039, respectively). Conclusion: The obtained results suggested that H. pylori infection can be considered as a risk factor for colon cancer and adenomatous polyps.

Abstract:

Background and Aim: Bond failure between bracket and tooth is one of the problems in orthodontic treatments. Placement of bracket increases the accumulation of plaque and periodontal problems, different ways such as mouth rinses are used to control these problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Ortho kin and Oral B mouth rinses on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets, taken in the faculty of dentistry.Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, the brackets were bonded with a self cure composite to 45 human premolar teeth. Then the teeth were divided into three equal groups. The samples of all three groups were stored in artificial saliva for two weeks. The samples of experimental groups were placed in Ortho kin and Oral B mouth rinses for 60 seconds twice a day. The shear bond strength (SBS) values and adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores of the groups were evaluated and the data were analysed statistically by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), LSD and Chi-square tests.   Results: Control group was found to have the highest SBS for 15.27±0.58 Mpa, followed by Oral B group for 10.11±0.94 Mpa. Ortho kin group had the lowest SBS for 7.59±0.59. The differences were statistically significant (P<0.001). Ortho kin group showed a higher frequency of ARI score of 2, but in Control and Oral B groups ARI score was 3. The differences were statistically significant (P<0.001).  Conclusion: The application of Ortho kin and Oral B after bracket bonding decreased SBS but the values were well within the clinically acceptable range of SBS. It is suggested to use Oral B instead of Ortho kin due to the higher SBS.
